"Jute" is an exploration of texture with its use of burlap, gesso and acrylic paint on canvas. Artist Stephane Fontaine cut areas of the burlap's warp and weft to manipulate the weave, capturing raw natural texture. "To me, the piece became a textured, serene, transitional landscape in the end," he explains. Reproduced here to emulate the artist's original techniques. Hangs in two orientations.
Stephane Fontaine is an Ontario-based artist who favors exploring different materials, mediums and subjects, never settling on a single style. "The only thing that matters to me is being completely and utterly in the present moment," he says. "This is the essence of creativity."
