Artists in Chulucanas in Northern Peru have hand-thrown this unique pottery for generations—a traditional local craft that dates back to pre-Incan times. Several artisans tend to the elaborate process, beginning with hand-kneading clay and throwing it on a wheel to create the vessel. Then, before firing, an artisan hand-burnishes the inside edge using a stone, resulting in a signature high-shine finish. Finally, the vase undergoes several firings in a special kiln that imparts the natural resin of mango leaves onto each piece, resulting in a signature blackened finish. It's ancient artistry for the modern home. CB2 exclusive.
