Inspired by the Impressionists' compositional studies, abstract painter Suzie Jellinek starts each work by applying gesso to raw canvas. Interested in how a painting evolves with every stroke, the artist builds layers of acrylic while leaving the raw canvas exposed in places for a somewhat unfinished look. In "Ahead of Yourself," oval shapes recall natural forms to represent birth and rebirth. "The painting starts with oval shapes, which have no beginning or ending. They are painted in such a way that you don't know where they start or end," the artist explains.
